For our research at the interface of light technology and cannabis cultivation, we needed a laboratory that not only works with technical precision, but is also flexible enough to realistically reproduce very different climatic conditions.

CarbonActive has made exactly that possible - with an energy-saving semi-loop-based 4-tube system that gives us full control over temperature, air humidity and CO₂ fumigation. Combined with our lighting technology and intelligent control systems, we can now further develop our products under controlled laboratory conditions.

SANlight planned the construction of a new technical center in Schruns for research on cannabis plants under controlled conditions. The aim was to further develop lighting technologies and specifically research their influence on genetics, growth and quality.

To achieve these goals, SANlight needed a facility that could produce almost any climate imaginable – including extremes of temperature and humidity, CO₂ fumigation and low-fluctuation climates throughout the year.

The special requirements for the research rooms placed high demands on technology and planning:

  • Simulation of different climate zones with narrow tolerances
  • Fully controllable semi-loop ventilation guide
  • Integration into a two-room system with maximum flexibility
  • Combination with CO₂ gassing and optimized light output
  • High energy efficiency (SCOP/SEER) and redundancy in accordance with GMP standards
  • Space-challenging insertion on the 2nd floor while the construction site is ongoing
  • Facility type:Two room-in-room IGC systems with a gross installation area of 75 m², installed in an office complex with very limited space for the necessary installations
  • Climate control:
    – Chiller with heat pump
    – Semi-loop ventilation with CO₂ fumigation
    – Temperature range light phase: 18-35 °C
    – Air humidity: 50-95 %
  • Control systems:Siemens logo control systems with touch screen & remote access
  • Data management:Logging & analysis via integrated sensors (Belimo)
